<image:caption>One of my favorite pictures in the museum is a conceptual drawing of what the farmstead may have looked like in the 1200s. You can see the little pool at the bottom and the doorway leading to it. That’s where the Medieval tunnel was. This was a good illustration because it really helps you imagine what the fortress looked like when you walk around excavation sites.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is the Snorralaug, or Snorri’s Pool. The door built into the hill leads to the tunnel that leads from Snorri’s house to the pool. Most of the pool is a reconstruction except the base stones.</image:caption>

<image:caption>You can get a better look of the other craters from Grábrók. From this point of view you can really see the devastation the eruption caused in the area. One can imagine what the Viking thought when these massive mountains exploded with lava. Did they think the devil had come to earth? Did they believe the time of Ragnarök had come?</image:caption>

<image:caption>The inner part of the chimney is original. The bricks apparently were not as hard since they did not need to face the elements. <image:caption>Above, this is the officer’s quarters. It looks like small jailcells but those were actually the rooms of the higher ups. This was more luxurious than the rest of the crew who just slept on hammocks in the gundeck. They also ate there too at their stations. Right: A picture inside one of the officer’s quarters. They only had their hammock and a tiny desk, but this was still much more room than a common crewman had.</image:caption>

<image:title>Travel Blog - Long Weekend in the Bay State: Eastern Massachusetts - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>On the cruise ship, looking back at Boston. Every time we are in a lake or city near water we like to do a cruise. The narration in this cruise was very good. One interesting fact by our tour guide was pointing out large ships that were digging out the bottom of the sea to make the harbor deeper.</image:caption>

<image:title>Travel Blog - Long Weekend in the Bay State: Eastern Massachusetts - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Another interesting part of the cruise was a good view of Fort Independence on Castle Island. This is a strategic location where forts had been built since very near the founding of Boston. The latest fort is from the mid-19th century. It is also well known for being an important location in the video game Fallout 4</image:caption>

There was no one else around, just the crashing of the waves, the clouds and ancient buildings and possibly eels whispering my fortune. I still have so many questions about the magic eels. How did they get in the well? How did they tell her the fortunes? The eels must be able to speak but I guess a speaking eel is less impressive than a fortune telling eel. How did the speak to the Saint? Did they just yell up the well? Were they telepathic? These are the things that keep me up at night.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A closer look at the artist's image of what the fort might have looked like circa 1650. You can see the stone moat and the court house in the center along with the other houses lining the walls. This image shows how simple the beginnings of Albany were, with just a small wooden fort and a few homes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Travel Blog - Colonial Dutch New York - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>There is a reproduction of an Iroquois longhouse and other Native American exhibits that are well worth checking out. This is really one of the highlights of the Museum. The Dutch were on good terms with the Iroquois and their trade with them allowed the Dutch (and later the English colony) to thrive.</image:caption>

<image:caption>There is also a Revolutionary era gunboat that was used to defend Philadelphia. Picture from 2025, this is a newer exhibit coinciding with the 250th anniversary of American independence. The ship has a very interesting history and the staff is using scientific methods to find out more about where the ship served in the Revolutionary War.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Exterior of the Crailo historic site. It has a Dutch Door, which is a door that has two openings, one on the top and one on the bottom (like a barn door). It is surmised this was used to let airflow in and the animals out. This is a Dutch architectural feature in many of these old houses. We visited in 2023.</image:caption>

It includes cobblestones added to the moat in 1648 as well as stones on one of the side walls of the fort. These were added to help reduce the impact that frequent floods had on the fort.</image:caption>

The hearth was essentially open except for a flue above it. I believe this was common in houses in the Netherlands since they were built on soggy soil.</image:title>
